EVALUATION OF LAST CALL.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms of real media products?

Our opening sequence belongs to the thriller . This is evident due to the choice of cast and movie setting. There was a careful arrangement of the scenes. We aimed to achieve a situation were the audience followed the main actor, this helped to create the enigma of the sequence. The last scene makes the audience think they are the stalker, as he approaches the girl. This works on the audience's mind. The use of an actress was intentional, because it holds more orientation for thriller audiences. A girl would be able to show more emotion to the text message received- "Jenny i can see you". A boy might not see it as that much of a treat and thus the aim of the sequence would not be achieved. The bedroom scene holds many connotations to a teen girl's private life. The stroking of the bed, which symbolises many things in a teen girl's life was done to create a more deeper relationship with the audience, as most of them can relate to it. The shower scene was done in a white bathroom with a white door. The use of 'white' is to create a neutral effect that concentrates on the mind. If this was a professional production, greater emphasis would be made on the use of white i.e a 'pure' white bathroom.

What kind of media institution is likely to distribute your product?

Our product relates very much to real life situations and thus would easily be distributed on the mainstream. The audience can easily relate to the story line and as well feel empathy for the girl being stalked. A good example of an institution would be Fox movies, who have are affiliated with movies like shurrer (2008). If our film were to be published, it is our hope it would be of this professional quality.

Fox movies would be a good choice, as its popularity eases the difficulties of advertising our thriller to different peer and social groups. Its solid background allows our movie to be shot to a very high level, were it can be reviewed and re-edited if necessary to achieve optimum definition of the genre.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

In mainstream media today teenagers are the main target for thriller movies. Our product incoporated this aiming our film at late teenagers, because the story line relates to their day to day activities in college, which is the film's setting. Also the age group of the people reflected in the movie is a directive to the audience. The classroom scene is a good example, as teenagers can easily associate themselves with the situation

What technological difficulties did you face?

Having not studied media in the past, many issues posed difficult to our team. At first we had the problem of familiarising ourselves with the Mac books given to us. Using the Final Cut application required a lot of work. We learnt how to add files onto the board and cut scenes with the use of fades. Quick Time conversions formatted our video files to high broadband quality, which can be upload onto the internet. The Garage Band application was used to obtain the sound track for the film. At first we tried to manually make the track with piano application and beat maker. This proved difficult and retreated to getting one of the already composed tracks. We used the 'emotional piano' track. We felt this worked with the pace of the film and also helped to pass across that intense emotion the actress was going through. We learned how to operate the filming equipment, camera and tripod stand which did not take much time. In order to ensure security of the boarding house used in the film. The punching in of the security code was done by placing a stopper at the foot of the door and punching in a made up code. During the editing of the film, we did not have a proper understanding of how to cut scenes and also the use of the 'command short cuts'. This we asked our teachers for help with in order to produce a work of the desired quality. Generally no problem was unable to be solved, although some took longer than other

What do you feel you have learnt looking back at your preliminary task?

Our planning of scenes has improved. As there is a clear difference in the smoothness of continuity between the scenes. Also our new knowledge on creating music sound tracks, gives our piece more meaning. The use of fades and cuts are more explicit in our final piece than was not as evident in our preliminary task. Our knowledge of using texts and fonts is also an issue to touch, as we were able to use certain font types to help relate our story to the audience. The use of the broken font for the title was deliberately done to further instill the enigma and psycho of the film to our audience. We have been able to compile all the information given to us to create this piece and we believe that a vast quantity has been learned.

How would you attract or address your audience?

In order to achieve this, advertisement campaigns would have been set up to build the necessary hype for the film. Posters would be our main means of advertising. Posters would include the title and main actors and when the date of the film premiers. This would give the audience and idea of what to expect and would cause them to be eager to see the film. Strategic locations would be selected for this campaign, places such as recreation centers, colleges, cinemas and fast food outlets.

In the course of the film the audience is addressed. The use of actual teenagers was an intentional move, as this would work on the sub conscious of the viewers that is they can imagine being in the same scenario. Which is the sub purpose of the film to advice or educate them on cyber bulling and stalking, which is a pressing problem in our technologically advanced society.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In relation to class, the film drifts more to the working class. The conventions represented do not depict high status. Reasons being that the college used is a public one. We targeted the working class, because they are relatively the largest in the UK and if the film were to be distributed, this would be highly advantageous.

SOUND TRACK TREATMENT.

The sound track for the thriller is piano played in an emotional tone. This was aimed to relate the feelings of the actress to the music. The soft playing of the piano, also helps to create the enigma of the movie. It creates a build up through out the piece and hopefully keeps the audience attentive. The sound track was derived from the garage band application and is a copy right free track.

NARRATIVE OF THRILLER OPENING SEQUENCE

STORY LINE: The story is about a man who is in his house, watching Tv and is also looking terrified. Then his phone rings and he keeps saying hello but no one answers. Then the next minute he hears his door be, walks to the door but no one's there. Then a minutes later, something strange happens, the bell and the phone rings and also heavy knocks on the door at the same time. The man opens the door and there is a big scream from him. He leaves the door, runs upstairs and locks his self in the room. He see something so terrifying.

MIS EN SCENE:  The movie takes place in a inside and outside a house.

SOUND: The use of a self made track by a student. The  track is more of a piano with softly played strings which brings the mystery. Its also has non-diegetic sounds like the door bell, phone, footsteps and the television sounds. All this sounds make the character more inconvenient.

FONT: The font set would be a bold, block and huge writing. With a deep black background, with the writings in red  to create fair, worries and shock.

REASON FOR PICKING WHICH THIRLLER TREATMENT TO DEVELOP

The movie opening we have chosen is about the girl in College, who is being stalked.

Continuity Exercise 2.1

STRENGTHS
We were able to use a range of shot sizes in the video. Tracking, over the shoulder,close-up,extreme close-up and long shots were used in the exercise to show .We learnt three new shot types,match-on-action,shot reverse and 180 degree rule. These brought a certain level of improvement from the last continuity exercise. It gave us a wider range and added to the beauty of the final product.
We had good actors, who are also media students, which made it easier for the shots to be done.As they have an understanding of the subject and now what is needed for the exercise.
The use of the library, made it more realistic as we were able to film with other students there. This adds to the quality of the video. It also shows as a group we've been able to develop.
As a group we've advanced in the area of filming and camera positions and other technical things.

WEAKNESS
We found it difficult to do the match-on-action shot. This is probably, because we were just learning the shot.
Most of our problems came about during the editing,as this is the stage were you either make or mare your project. This stage was hard, because we were learning to use the advanced equipment and edit at the same time. This slowed us down a little, but at the end we were able to work round it.

Analysis of Sin city

The movie starts off with captions of a man on his kneels and a woman on this legs, afterwards lots off buildings are seen and drifts slowly to the name of the movie, meaning the building are used to bring out the name of the movie. then splashes of red come on the title, this signifies blood, which creates fear all plated on a black background. It follows into the characters of the movie, this has a continuous black background with the comic drawing to signify people and the name of the film appears to create a fear and mystery to viewers. It sets out a musical background of a bass piano sound, and that helps create tension to the audience, but also helps build the enigma of the movie.

NARRATIVE OF THRILLER OPENING SEQUENCE

STORY LINE
The movie is about a teenage girl in University. She is your average teenage girl with everyday issues. Her problems get worse when she starts receiving uncomfortable text messages from an unknown number. She starts to feel like she's being watched and is constantly stressed.
One night she's rushing to the train station and as she's standing on the platform-the unthinkable happens.

MIS EN SCENE
The movie takes place in a University setting. Rooms like classrooms, cafeteria, computer labs would be used. The train station-the name of the train station and the tracks would be used in the scene. The sequence is a fade in between two scenes.

SOUND
Using a copy right sound track, created by a student. The track is mainly piano and soft deep drums that set the mood and help create the enigma of the movie.
Non-diegetic sounds include foot steeps, creaking of doors opening, heavy breathing, the text message ringtone, sound of water in the shower etc. The non-diegetic sounds would bring that 'uncomfortable feeling' to the audience.

FONTS
I intend to use large and bold red and gray fonts over black background. The red signifies danger, fear and alertness The grey compliments the red, making it stand out more. The grey can signify confusion or disarray.

PACE
The pace of the sound track is medium tempo. The presentation of credits will go with the same pace, showing uniformity.

Analysis of tomorrow never dies opening sequence

The movie opens with a series of numbers and letters in a space. It creates the imagery of a phone directory. The way the numbers and letters move gives the audience and uncomfortable view. The titles cut into a shot of a watch. This has connotations to ‘tomorrow’ in the title. Images of women are seen in silhouette form in most of the shots that follow. These women are in bullets in one of the shots, this can be related to women empowerment. It gives the audience the idea of women in relation to violence, as other weapons are shown in subsequent shots. The music is mainly bass, guitars, drums and a piano played in a slow tempo. This calms the audience, whilst building the enigma of the film. The music is also in sync with most of the body movements of the women. The shots also elaborate on the female anatomy. It shows parts of the female body, as if viewed under some kind of x ray. This added to the special effects of the sequence. Throughout the sequence there is an elaborate use of colour, which connotes different meanings to the shots. Shots done in red could connate danger and those done in grayish blue imply calmer, cooler meanings. This creates a contradicting effect to the sequence.
